Astigmatism & Toric Lenses

Astigmatism & Toric Lenses

What is an astigmatism?

An astigmatism is a condition in which the eye is not completely round in shape. It’s incredibly common and not something to be frightened of or concerned about. Rather than being round like a basketball, an eye with astigmatism is more misshapen and appears more like a football. Typically, it’s a congenital condition, and some children can outgrow their astigmatism. Unfortunately, for some patients, the astigmatism can worsen over time; doctors don’t really know what causes astigmatism or why they improve or get worse over time.

The football-like shape affects how light enters the cornea and can bend the light at uneven and different angles, creating blurry images. Astigmatisms can also cause headaches and eye discomfort. However, vision is easily corrected using glasses or toric contacts. The prescription for both will include a cylinder and axis designation, which affects how the correction (glasses or contacts) actually “fix” the problem and clear up the vision.

What is a toric lens?

Toric lenses are typically prescribed to patients with astigmatism. Toric lenses are unique in a couple of ways.

While regular contacts offer one power on the entire lens, toric lenses are different. They offer varying powers in different areas of the lens to correct the vision in the different areas of the eyes as characterized by astigmatism. The lenses also rotate on the eye after insertion to align the cylinder and axis for the best vision based on the individual astigmatism and eye.

Since toric lenses are a bit more complex, it may take a couple of fittings, power changes and even brand changes, so make sure you’re satisfied with the fit and clarity before finalizing the prescription and ordering.

Just because you have an astigmatism, it doesn’t mean contacts are out of reach for you. Ask your doctor about toric lenses and order your perfect vision from nextdaycontacts.com and have them faster and cheaper than your doctor’s office! Click here for step-by-step directions to ordering.
